English II basically follows the same goal and design as “English I” but selects reading materials of a higher and more difficult level. Students will be encouraged to move from the basic focus on vocabulary and sentence grammar to think about the overall argument or main themes of an article, thus prepared for the seminar way of conducting a class. Another major difference from “English I” is that an English novel of about 300 pages will be assigned in order to enhance students’ exposure to the language and the sophistication of their reading ability. Students will be asked to read roughly the same proportion of the novel weekly in order to finish before the semester ends, and about one third of the class time will be devoted to discussing the novel each week.
